NZMATES Conducts NZMATES Conducts Energy Potential Assessment and Capacity Factor Calculation of Tidal Currents Using 3D Numerical Simulations in the Batu Jatuh Strait, Tual City

After conducting a tidal current potential study in Tual City in 2023, NZMATES is now continuing with a study on energy potential and capacity factor calculations for tidal currents, based on three-dimensional numerical simulations in the waters of Watdek Strait, Tual City, Southeast Maluku Regency. This study is being carried out from September to November 2024. Over the course of one month, the research will assess the energy potential of tidal currents and the capacity factor in Watdek Strait, as well as produce data on water flow rates and the kinetic energy of ocean currents, which will serve as the basis for the technical design of tidal turbine and power generation platform designs.

The location of Watdek Strait was selected for the energy potential calculations of tidal currents and the capacity factor, which will be carried out using 3D simulation data of currents. Through this method, the spatial and temporal analysis of ocean currents will be performed, along with the calculation of tidal energy potential. This follows the findings from observations and preliminary studies conducted from January to March 2023, which identified tidal current potential for further development.
