Since its inauguration on 4 July 2022, the Pūngao Pattimura Mini-grid Laboratory has become a vital facility for supporting renewable energy education at Pattimura University (Unpatti). Established in 2020, the lab features a 5kWp solar PV installation used for various activities, including solar PV training for students, Operation & Maintenance (O&M) and Electrical Safety (K3) training for government solar PV operators, and research for student theses.
NZMATES programme has been instrumental in maintaining the lab. Moving forward, NZMATES is encouraging Unpatti to take steps towards independence by transforming the facility into a solar training centre for Maluku Province. Currently, NZMATES is developing a robust business plan to ensure the lab’s long-term sustainability. This plan includes market analysis, cost and pricing strategies, potential revenue streams, and marketing approaches—all designed to address financial and operational challenges that have hindered the lab’s optimal management.
The initiative also aims to provide comprehensive training for solar PV operators, technicians, and installers, benefitting not only Unpatti students but also government institutions, private sector entities, and the wider community seeking to build capacity in renewable energy, particularly solar power. By producing highly skilled solar PV professionals, the Pūngao Pattimura Mini-grid Laboratory will enhance the reliability and sustainability of renewable energy projects across Maluku Province.
