Maluku possesses abundant renewable energy potential. However, its primary energy needs are still largely met by fossil fuels. With its rich resources, Maluku holds significant potential to play a key role in Indonesia’s sustainable energy future. Despite these opportunities, the region faces several challenges, one of which is the lack of awareness and readiness among its youth to engage in the green energy sector. Many young people in Maluku are unaware of the ongoing energy transition or lack knowledge about the career opportunities it presents.
As part of the Side Event at the 1st Maluku Energy Forum 2024, the NZMATES hosted a talk show titled “Preparing Maluku’s Young Generation for Careers in the Renewable Energy Sector Towards Sustainable Development” on Thursday, 21 November 2024. The speakers for this talk show included Icheiko Ramadhanty Achmad, Communication and Community Development Manager at GAWIREA, and Rizky Rahma Putra, Power System Planning Officer at PT. PLN (Persero) UIW MMU.
The attendees, consisting of university students in Maluku and participants of the Renewable Energy Innovation Competition, were encouraged to increase their awareness of the importance of the energy transition and the role of the renewable energy sector in achieving a sustainable future. This talk show aimed to bridge the gap experienced by the younger generation regarding Green Jobs by providing insights into the types of Green Jobs available and the skills required. Participants were also encouraged to engage in discussions on how the education system, local government, and private sector can collaborate to equip young people with the tools needed to succeed in the renewable energy industry.
